Transportation in Athens starts

The Airport

Eleftherios Venizelos international airport is located 21 km east of Athens. There are 3 buses that operate every day from the airport to major location in the city. The tickets are valid for 24 hours and can be used on all sort of public transportation in Athens: buses, trolley and metro.

The Bus E94 operates between the airport and the Ethniki Amyna, the terminus of the metro's line 3. The bus makes about 30 minutes.
The Bus E95 operates between the airport and the Plateia Syntagmatos, Athens' central square where a metro station is also situated. The line operates 24 hours and the bus makes from 60 to 90 minutes, depending of the traffic.
The Bus E96 operates between the airport and Piraeus, Athens' main port to the islands. The line operates 24 hours and makes 60 to 90 minutes. There is also the possibility to take a taxi from the airport to any destination in Athens and Piraeus.

Fares depend to the time of day and traffic conditions. The fares are doubled between midnight and 6 am. There is also an airport surcharge and a surcharge depending on the number of luggage...

Bus and Trolley

As all the things that the city of Athens offers to the visitors are located in a walking distance from the center, the use of bus or trolley is not really needed. There is huge network of buses that operates in Athens and its suburbs. Expect from buses that operates 24 hours between the city of Athens and Piraeus, they usually operates from 6 am until midnight. The trolley operates from 5 am until midnight.

The Greek National Organisation (EOT) offers free maps that show most of the itineraries. Tickets are not sold in the bus or trolley and must be bought in the transport kiosk or in the many ""periptera". The cost of a ticket is 0.45 cents.

Long Distance Buses (Ktel)
There are 2 central stations in Athens.
Terminal A: It is located Kifissou 100 (tel: 210 5124910). Buses operate to itineraries such as Corinth, Patras, Thessaloniki, Larissa, Igoumenitsa, Corfu, Zakynthos, and Lefkada�
Terminal B: It is located Liossion 260 (tel: 210 8317153) and buses operate to destinations such as Delphi, Halkida.

Metro

The metro is a new way of transportation since it was inaugurated in 2001. The metro has totally changed the Athenians' way of life. There are only 3 lines but they already serve the center of the city very well. But they are still working to enlarge the network. The central station is located at Syntagma, Athens' central square. A ticket costs 0.70 cents.

Taxis

The taxis of Athens are easily detectable as there are yellow and can been seen everywhere and at any time. Despite the impressing number of taxis that can be seen around Athens, it can be sometimes really difficult to get one. One of the particularities of the taxis in Athens is that they can take you even if they have already passenger in it. And the thing is that every person will be charged the fare shown in the meter.

The meter always starts with a minimum charge of 0.75 cents. Fares then depend to the time of the day and traffic conditions. The fare is doubled between midnight and 6 am. There is also a surcharge from ports, airport, rail station and bus station.
